Club Notes 11TH March 2014
The club lost an icon last week with the passing of Tony Herbert. Tony joined Faughs in 1944 having come to Dublin from the famed Ahane club in Limerick already the holder of an All-Ireland medal and during his playing career in Dublin won three county championships, four leagues, Boland Cups and practically every honour in the book plus two Leinster medals with Dublin and appeared in two All-Ireland finals. To his family Paddy, Fergal, Ciaran, Brid Carole and Maura, his brother Eamon and his extended family we extend sincerest sympathy. Through the medium of the club notes the Herbert family would like to thank the chairmen, and members of the Faughs and Ahane clubs for the wonderful tributes to Tony at the funeral, from the guard of honour at the church, of which Tony would have been very proud, Eamonn Rea’s oration at the graveside and Turlough’s rendition of the Mulcair River, to Mags Duggan and club staff for their care and attention. Deepest sympathy also to the Brady family on the death of Marie, grandmother of minor player, Ciaran. Ar dheis laimh De go raibh a nAnamacha.
Senior hurlers had a busy week, having defeated Na Fianna in a tough encounter on Sunday, they travelled to Carlow to play Naomh Eoin in the Leinster League on Monday and were unlucky to lose by a single point in controversial circumstances, then on Sunday they had a one-point win over Camross also in the Leinster League. Their next outing is v Ballygalget on Saturday afternoon. Watch the club notice board or web page for details of next Leinster fixture v Clonkill (Westmeath) details tba. Well done to Ronan Hennessy, Carl O’Mahony, Sean Lowney, Tom Walsh, Richie Neville and Tadhgh Clifford who have all performed with distinction having joined the senior ranks this year.
