Divison 2 League Match Faughs v Clontarf – 11th June 2014
On a glorious summer evening in Tymon Park the Faughs boys, after a slow start, got into their rhythm and had a convincing win over Clontarf. Faughs played ‘down the hill’ in the first half but started slowly. Straight from the throw-in Clontarf’s strong midfielder soloed up the pitch and drove a rasping shot into the top corner of the net leaving Sean Kenny no chance. Faughs soon got into their stride with a goal from chief goal poacher Ronan Holohan and this was soon followed up with points from Sean Duffy and James O’Brien. Faughs started to get on top in their halfback line with Sean Fitzgerald giving an exhibition of high fielding. ‘Fitzy’s’ distribution was first class striking off both his right and left into the lively forward line. This primary position and distribution gave Faughs a platform to tag on further points from Rian Maher & Liam Mostyn.
Faughs now in the ascendancy turned on the style with long range points from Max Russell, and the accuracy from Sean Duffy on the placed balls was a joy to behold. Clontarf continued to cause trouble each time they entered the Faughs half but Faughs captain, Tom McVeigh, was outstanding in defence with many timely blocks and hooks. Tom’s clearances were first class when he burst out of defence and drove the ball down to the forwards.
Clontarf started brightly again in the second half and registered another goal. Clontarfs tails were now up as they sensed a comeback. Faughs had to defend, and that they did with good work from Stephen Grogan, Max Fitzgerald and Oisin Lydon. Max Russell was now taking control in midfield winning every ‘dirty ball’. It was fitting he scored the goal of the match with a sweet strike off his weaker left hand side, the ball struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced down across the line. This goal took the wind out of Clontarfs sails and Faughs tagged on more points through ‘Jambo’ O’Brien, Rian Maher and Sean Duffy. Cian Sullivan and Leon Avery also make a contribution from the bench. A fantastic victory for Faughs on a score line of 5:13 to 2:04.
